Ashley Nicole Nolan, 27, failed to negotiate a turn on Point Lookout Road around 1:44 a.m. Saturday, March 16, in Leonardtown, the St. Mary County Sheriff's Office said.

The Honda Odyssey driven by Nolan left the road and overturned several times before striking a tree.

Police said only that three children were found to have been improperly restrained: Two were ejected from the vehicle and were transported to area trauma centers with life-threatening injuries; and a third was taken to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital.

That child was later pronounced dead.

While police declined to identify the boy, a GoFundMe campaign says 8-year-old Brysen Carter was killed in the crash and his two siblings remained hospitalized.

A spokesperson for the county sheriff's office said Nolan was the mother of the three children and that alcohol and speed were considered contributing factors in the crash. She was taken to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital and had not been charged as of press time.

Records show Nolan has a history of traffic offenses. In March 2020, she pleaded guilty to driving/to drive motor vehicle on highway without required license and authorization.

Then, in April 2021, Nolan was issued a speeding ticket for going 67 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or any events leading up to it is asked to call Corporal Dale Reppel at Dale.Reppel@stmaryscountymd.gov or 240-496-6694.

Services for Brysen will be held on April 2. Click here for details.
